New hope for the new year...
Last month I got all teary-eyed over a story about the rescue & rehab of Michael Vick's dogs. As of November 2008, many of the dogs have been adopted into permanent homes or are fostered with rescue folk. I couldn't find that particular video, but the story is very encouraging, so I'm posting a couple of older videos.
I know very little about Pit Bulls or the rehabilitation of fighting dogs, but I was taken aback by the statement of a spokesperson for an organization fighting animal abuse. She said that the Vick dogs could not be rehabbed successfully and they should have been put down so the money could be used to rescue dogs who were better rehab candidates. Since I can't find the source video, I won't name the organization, but it really threw me. The money wouldn't be there if not for Vick's dogs, so nobody actually lost anything. Many of the dogs already have been adopted.
Michael Vick's Dogs: From Fighters to Family Pets... a video showing some of the dogs with volunteers from Bad Rap, a rescue group in Oakland, CA. Like the dogs themselves, the video looks forward, not back to the past.
This National Geographic video briefly describes the rehabilitation process
One last holiday LOL
